2009 Counselor Application

2009 USA Summer Camp

Updated: October 2, 2008

We are now accepting applications for the 2009 USA Summer Camp program.  Currently, we are not using the online application format.  To receive an information package about the program and an application form:

1.               Email to request the forms.  Please put “2009 Camp” as your subject title.

2.               If you are a student at one of our partner schools, you should apply directly to your school.  If you are not sure if your school is a partner school, let us know in your email the name of your school.

3.               To learn more about our program you can also visit www.camp.guyhealyjapan.com.  Most 2008 information will apply.  Revisions will be highlighted in the information package being emailed out and updated soon on our site.

4.               While USA Summer Camp will continue to cover airfare and major living expenses in Japan, selected online applicants will be required to pay $150.  This nominal fee is to help cover the recent fuel surcharges charged by airlines.  Selected counselors will not have to pay this fee until after they are selected and their air tickets are being booked.  In some cases it is also possible to have this fee waived.  We will further explain that in the information package.

We will begin sending out the information packages and application forms oTuesday, October 6.  Please email us to get your name on the emailing list.

In Memory of Melissa Ahrens (1983 – 2008)

Guy Healy, Japan and USA Summer Camp were shocked to learn of the tragic and senseless death of Melissa “Mo” Ahrens on Sunday, September 20.  Melissa was the victim of a drunk driver hit-and-run accident in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  She was 25 years old.

Melissa was a bright and shining superstar in the history of USA Summer Camp.  She served as a counselor for two summers (2003, 2004), as an assistant team director in 2005 and was the American Director for Team 4 in 2007.  She was admired and respected by all she worked with and her bright smile and spirit touched countless lives of Japanese children in our program.  Her life was too short but it was very full.  But the world needs more Melissas, not less.  Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and hope they can somehow, someday find peace with this senseless tragedy.

In honor of Melissa’s memory USA Summer Camp will establish a Counselor “Hall of Fame” and Melissa will be the first inductee.  In life no counselor was ever more deserving.  In spirit she will continue to inspire and motivate future counselors.  Her smile and passion for helping people will live forever at USA Summer Camp.

See you at Camp, Mo!

We encourage those who worked with Melissa to visit the following website to read and offer messages in her memory:

Memorial Services are planned for Saturday, September 27 at Max A. Sass & Sons in Franklin, Wisconsin.  http://www.maxsass.com/map_franklin.php

ENG - English for the Next Generation

ENG is an exciting new program for teaching English in Japan.  We put three native speakers in a classroom once a week and give the teachers and the students an exciting curriculum.  Our teachers are interns from the United States , most of whom are seeking a degree in teaching and want to use this internship (ENG) as their practicum.  Our teachers all have teaching experience and are well-trained in the ENG model and curriculum before they step into the classroom.

To our teachers, Guy Healy, Japan provides:

  • round-trip airfare and transportation to the target city in Japan
  • housing (usually provided by the school, usually a host family)
  • training
  • a curriculum
  • living support in Japan
  • placement in a school in Japan
  • coordination with the intern's home school, if necessary

We're looking for some motivated, energetic, bright future teachers to help us revolutionize English education in Japan.  If you'd like more information, follow one of the links below.
