USA
SUMMER CAMP
There
is no greater mission than that of positively influencing a
child.
USA
Summer Camp has become the most famous and successful program
of Guy Healy, Japan. It is a unique program bringing young Japanese
students together with American counselors for a 24-hour a day
English immersion program. Stressing daily use of English, the
camp provides a 1 to 5 counselor/student ratio where counselors
are actually flown in from the United States.
USA
Summer Camp originally began in Nagasaki prefecture in the summer
of 1992. Throughout the years, USA Summer Camp has gained a lot
of respect and popularity. GHJ’s promotion of global friendship
and cooperation attracted the largest travel agency in Japan,
the Japan Travel Bureau (JTB), to sign a contract with GHJ for
USA Summer Camp to go national beginning in 2003. During the summer
of 2004, USA Summer Camp ran in seven different locations. The
original Nagasaki team continues to run independently and is not
supported by JTB. The other six teams that are supported by JTB
are located in: Tokyo (2), Osaka, Nagoya, Kita Kyushu, and Kumamoto.
While Guy Healy, Japan continues to plan and run the camp programs,
JTB does the marketing and camper recruitment for the camps.
The
close relationship between counselors and campers is what makes
USA Summer Camp such a unique and successful program. The counselors
are not “teachers” whose day is done when the lessons
are over; they are “friends” who enjoy meals, recreation
and free time with their campers.
